Influence of the process speed in laser melt injection for reinforcing skin-pass rolls

Laser melt injection is a technology for producing metal matrix composite (MMC) layers on tools such as skin-pass rolls by injecting hard particles into laser-induced weld pool. However, low process speeds prevent the application of laser large scale. To overcome this drawback, new approach presented: High-speed (HSLMI) promising method generating highly wear-resistant MMC with high productivity. For first time, up to 100 m/min were reached HSLMI spherical fused tungsten carbide (SFTC) steel 1.2362 that used rolls. In paper, influence speed microstructure and wear resistance layer investigated. The changes from dendritic needle-shaped structure when 60 or higher are applied. Furthermore, often features cracks. SFTC show dissolution seam. It was found both crack susceptibility can be reduced significantly increasing speed. behavior studied in pin-on-plate test. reinforcement leads significant improvement over nonreinforced substrate. volume 3.6 0.1 0.3 mm 3 an particle-reinforcement.
